Activate and Martinsville Fire and EMS are all fired up over their new biking program.  Emergency personnel recently partnered with Activate to meet fitness requirements to continue providing superior Fire and EMS services to the citizens of Martinsville and our community. Through this partnership, Activate is providing the fire department with fitness counseling. In addition, Activate has provided the department with mountain bikes, helmets, and provided bicycle safety training. Jeannie Frisco, Program Director for Activate, explained to the guys that “biking is a great way to build muscle and get a great cardio workout.”

Activate staff are excited about the firestorm that the bikes have caused. So if you are in Uptown Martinsville and see our Fire and EMS crew riding their bikes give them a “thumbs up” for supporting an active lifestyle and for being there to save lives.

Over 30 women took a walk through Uptown Martinsville at United Way's "Women Take the Streets" event on Saturday, July 31.  The 1.5 mile walk around Uptown was developed to help women and girls learn more about fitness and health.  Walkers each received a free pedometer donated by Activate MHC so that they could continue to increase their fitness level.  After the walk, participants attended a health fair at the Artisan Center where women health experts gave free health screenings and advice about nutrition and fitness.

"Our hope was to inspire women and girls of all sizes and ages to get out and get moving," said Jeannie Frisco, a member of United Way's For Women Only Event Volunteer Governing Committee and Program Director of Activate MHC.  "Only a few minutes of exercise a day can make a real impact on a person's health, especially for a woman."

"United Way is focused on improving three areas of our community- education, income and health," said Tiffani Underwood, Executive Director of the United Way of Henry County and Martinsville.  "This event was a perfect way to show women and girls in our community where to find help if they need it."

Women Take the Streets was just one part of the United Way's three day 2010 For Women Only event.  There was also a luncheon, "Females Financing their Future" workshop at the Dutch Inn on Friday, July 30 and "Woman of the Year" awards ceremony at Rives Theatre on Thursday, July 29.

Activate staff would like to congratulate the finalists at Thursdays Woman of the Year event.  Activate Program Director, Jeannie Frisco, was one of 9 finalists chosen from dozens nominated.
